My night in the Carradine death hotel

June 6, 2009

David Carradine

In an eerie prelude to the sad death of David Carradine, I too found myself swinging on a rope from the ceiling of the Swissotel Nai Lert Park in Bangkok.

Carradine reportedly sipped his final drink in the hotel’s stylish “Syn” Bar, where I once enjoyed a quiet evening. The seating arrangements include some strange plastic half-spheres suspended from the ceiling which look like something out of Barbarella. They’re fun, if a little impractical, but I fear they may have implanted the seed of an unwise idea in David Carradine’s troubled mind.

Lurid celebrity deaths aside, the Syn Bar’s other claim to fame is that it boasts the longest bar to lavatory walk in Bangkok. A uniformed guide leads you through a warren of corridors and then waits outside while you do your business before shepherding you back again.

Of course, the place is usually deserted and, like most hotel bars, it feels a bit depressing but I survived the experience without stringing myself up in a closet.

Update 7 June

My better half gives us the Thai perspective on Carradine’s strange demise:

Why he do like that? He not old. OK, he old but he look good … apart from his head.
