The Rat’s Off. Would Sir Care to Try Dog?

Dognappings are soaring in Cambodia as consumers react to rising world food prices. Hard up Cambodians aren’t picky when it comes to protein so, with rat currently out of season, the stolen pooches are ending up in the pot.
Hunters brandishing wire nooses are reportedly snaring dogs quite openly on the streets of Phnom Penh. Their catch is sold on to bargain hunters as “special meat.”
The next rice harvest may bring relief to Cambodian canines through the availability of cheap rat meat from the paddy fields but that won’t happen until December. In the meantime, man’s best friend will have to keep his head down.

The spike in world food prices is partly due to agricultural production being diverted into biofuels. Motorists who fill up with biodiesel can therefore be held directly responsible for the fate of this cute puppy. Bastards!
