Sorry is not the hardest word

June 5, 2009

Elton John would have us believe that “sorry seems to be the hardest word” but, for Thai students of English, this is plainly not true.

“Squirrel” will always be the hardest word to pronounce.

With his solid command of English, our urbane Prime Minister Abhisit is a polished performer on the international stage but the danger always exists that a cocky journalist might trip him up with a surprise question about squirrels.

Incidentally, the Thai word for sorry – in the sense of excusing yourself – is “kor toht”, which translates literally as “I would like punishment”. Apparently, this is the correct way to ask people to move aside as you exit the crowded Skytrain but, personally, I can’t bring myself to use a phrase quite so open to misinterpretation.

Hilarious. I read it outloud to the man, making it doubly so.

I’m grateful that I don’t wear makeup on a Sunday or I’d have to reapply everything, for sure.
